How we check a licence
This is the first of the six checks, and the only one that can stop the others happening. If we cannot match an operator to a register entry, it does not appear on this site.

Background
Australia licenses by state, not nationally
There is no single national gambling regulator here, which is what makes verification worth doing properly.
Online wagering is governed by the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, but the licences themselves are issued by state and territory authorities. An operator that is legal to advertise to Australians holds a current licence from one of them, most commonly the Northern Territory Racing and Wagering Commission, and otherwise bodies such as NSW Liquor & Gaming or the relevant Victorian or Tasmanian regulator.
Offshore casino and poker sites are a different matter. They are prohibited from offering those services to Australians at all, whatever licence they display, and we do not list them.
The Australian Communications and Media Authority enforces the Act and publishes plain-language guidance on what is and is not permitted.
Procedure
The check, in order
Each step has to pass before the next one runs.
Find the legal entity
The trading name on the front page is rarely the licence holder. We take the company name and ACN from the operator’s own terms and footer.
Identify the issuing authority
Every licensed operator names its regulator. Most Australian online bookmakers are licensed in the Northern Territory; others sit with NSW, Victorian or Tasmanian authorities.
Match it against the register
We check the entity against the regulator’s published list of licensees. If the entity and the authority do not match, the operator does not get listed.
Re-check and date it
Licences lapse and entities get restructured, so each record carries the date we last matched it. That date is on the record itself, not buried in a changelog.
